The ongoing discussion about a potential social media ban for children under the age of 14 in Austria has attracted significant public attention. As part of a scientific assessment by the science magazine Rudolphina of the University of Vienna, Kathrin Karsay contributed, alongside other researchers from different disciplines, current research insights on the effects of social media on children and adolescents.
Platform Design and Responsibility
In this context, Kathrin Karsay emphasizes in particular the complex effects of social media on children and adolescents. Research findings show that excessive use can have negative effects on mental health, though not all young people are affected to the same degree.
Additonally, she also points to the responsibility of the platforms themselves - for example, regarding transparent algorithms and design elements that encourage addictive behavior, such as “endless scrolling.”
Research Beyond Simplified Answers
This academicly driven analysis makes it clear that the discussion about social media goes far beyond the simple question of a ban and requires nuanced perspectives from both the academic community and general society.
